Collaborating to improve cancer control in Canada

CAPCA’s strategic directions focus our efforts on emerging areas where collaboration between cancer agencies and programs can have the greatest impact and where an integrated approach is needed to catalyze change to enhance the safe delivery of evidence-informed, high-quality, accessible cancer care in Canada.

Enhancing Access & Quality

To maintain a world-class cancer control system in Canada it is essential that the right care is accessible at the right place and at the right time, and that there are safeguards in place to ensure the quality of care being delivered. As cancer care grows in complexity, access and quality are increasingly dependent on having skilled professionals to deliver them. Our focus on enhancing access and quality seeks to:

  • Advance access to new systemic therapies and technologies by reviewing care guidelines that enhance coordination, access and support decision-making.
  • Develop a pan-Canadian health human resources plan by establishing a collaborative and sustainable approach between provinces that includes sharing different models of care and delivery, as well as best practices for recruitment and retention.

Supporting Innovation & Research

Cancer is constantly evolving, and so are the methods used to treat it.  Ongoing research and innovation ensure that Canada’s cancer system stays ahead of emerging challenges and continues to provide high-quality and effective care to patients. To do this, we are looking at evidence from other jurisdictions and considering potential partnerships and models of care. This focus on innovation and research seeks to:

  • Establish new partnerships that advance cancer research and innovation by developing a partnership strategy that enhances CAPCA’s capacity and reach, and fosters research and innovation.

Promoting Person-Centred Care & Outcomes

At the centre of all cancer control and cancer care is the health of Canada’s population and the individual patients within it. Since at least half of cancer patients in Canada will receive radiotherapy at some point in their treatment, there is focused effort on ensuring that radiation treatment delivered in Canada remains safe and that cancer centres can learn from the experiences of others to continue to deliver quality, person-centred care that is world-class. Our focus on promoting person-centred care and outcomes seeks to:

  • Improve quality, safety and access to radiation treatment that relies on real-world evidence via multi-organizational collaboration and support.
