Quality assurance guidelines for Canadian radiation treatment programs

ID: QRT.2019.12.04

This document outlines the overarching elements of quality that are important in all radiation treatment programs, together with Key Quality Indicators (KQIs), for periodic programmatic self-assessment and quality improvement.

The intent of these guidelines is to outline benchmarks for achievement by radiation treatment programs rather than describe standards of compliance.

This document is one in a suite of guideline documents created by the CPQR that together, address all aspects of quality and safety related to radiation treatment delivery.

Document history:

  • April 2011: Version 1 published by Canadian Partnership for Quality Radiotherapy
  • September 2013: Version 2 published, reflecting a comprehensive multi-stakeholder validation process using a modified-Delphi approach. This version assured that Key Quality Indicators were comprehensive, relevant, evidence-based and measurable.
  • December 2015: Version 3 published, reflecting alignment with the new Accreditation Canda Care Standards.
  • March 2020: Version 4 published following an extensive pan-Canadian program audit. The new version reflects advancements in quality and safety activity in Canadian radiation treatment programs, provides new progressive indicator measures, 2 new key quality indicators to support optimal staffing of radiation treatment programs and the introduction of peer review of palliative radiotherapy plans.
